Corvan Beltardois

Your ignorance is not your fault. The fates do not look kindly upon you. They do not look kindly upon any of us.

Corvan's theme - "Ambition"

Composed for character by Beepo Studios

Background

Corvan was born to the noble House Hawklight in Old Sharlayan and spent most of his life as a scholar. His father, Marxis, resided on the Forum, gaining a seat for his contributions to advancements in noulith prototypes and somanoutics.Even from a very young age, Corvan's thirst for knowledge was insatiable. Just as well, then, that he wasn't for want of materials to read and study. After spending several grueling years in the Studium, Corvan graduated with the equivalent of a medical doctorate.Even this, however, wasn't good enough. No matter how much he studied, or how many newfound abilities he gained, he could never gain his father's approval nor his mother's attention."There are more pages left unturned, Corvan."One day, Corvan overheard his father telling his mother that he wanted to cement his power in the Forum by ensuring his son received the Mark of the Archon... and to do so, more time at the Studium would be needed. It was at that point that Corvan decided, against his father's will, to leave the estate, renounce his nobility, and travel the world. He has seen sights galore, sampled many cuisines, and lived the life of solitude he had always dreamed of.Years later, upon returning to Sharlayan, he discovered that his parents were taken by the calamity. Though it was a bittersweet return to his estate, he has relinquished the house due to only having painful memories within it. He has rejected the legacy left for him by his father and has decided to forge a new one of his own and give new meaning to his family name. The fates, however, are capricious. The Hawklight name still carries weight in the Forum, and the rumor quickly spread that the 'prodigal son' had returned. Corvan must decide whether or not he will risk invoking his family name. Now, more than ever, what Corvan seeks is recognition through innovation. He may do anything... even with questionable motive... to get it.

To most people, Corvan can seem like an insufferable know-it-all. He uses flowery language every chance he gets and dismisses anyone who even looks untrustworthy. Get past this stoic, pedantic exterior, and you will find a layer of graciousness, generosity, politeness, and unwavering pragmatism. He is protective but non-confrontational; he would rather use intimidation and wit to get him through a conflict rather than violence. This does not preclude him, however, from employing his magical talents to defend either himself or others.Corvan is not religious, but he can appear superstitious; he believes that 'fate' or 'the fates' are in control, and they are a capricious and mischievous entity. The power of the Echo has manifested in a way that makes him remarkably perceptive; for instance, he can determine the fine details of an object, like a book, from a considerable distance away, and can often tell when someone is staring at him, even if his back is turned to them. However, he believes that everyone has such abilities, and would be surprised if others were not as observant.

Appearance

Corvan stands exceptionally tall at six and a half fulms, which he considers to be both a blessing and a curse. He does not need the glasses he always wears to see; they are simply a way to help him focus on the things he spots with his unnatural perception. No matter what Corvan is wearing, it will always be a shade of his favorite color, red, and will almost always have gloves of some kind. Aesthetics has never really been his top priority. One thing he does know is that a solid crimson is a good contrast to his azure eyes.

Out-of-Character

As a newcomer to the RP community, I feel that I will forever be outside it, looking in. I wish for you, whoever you are, to prove me wrong. As far as roleplaying goes, I've been playing D&D for years both as a DM and a player. I'm not that good of a writer and certainly not very creative, but I'd like to think I'm fairly decent. At the very least, I know how to spell and form complete sentences.I have a few RP friends and acquaintances. If you would like to join that circle then I would more than welcome it. I definitely need the practice. If you are reading this, please feel free to approach Corvan and say hello. Engage him with something other than banal minutiae about the weather or the like, and you may get something out of him that goes past niceties. All that being said, I feel I need to add the usual warning that I am not my character; do not expect my feelings to reflect my character's and vice versa.

Hooks

Sharlayan.
It is clear by his accent and vestments where he hails from, though it has been years since he had set foot in the city since he left. What has changed that he may not know about? Have you any news of the Hawklight estate? In the studium, he majored in somanoutics and aetheric theory and minored in astromancy. Perhaps you had a class with him when he was younger?
Alchemist.
Entirely self-trained, but prefers to use his skills for book bindings, tinctures, salves, and other concoctions that would do far more good than harm. Do not ask him to make you poison or a corrosive of any kind.
Magickal Bloodline.
The study of somanoutics is a family tradition; all members of the Hawklight clan bear the same birthmark, although Corvan's is on his cheek. It has come to his attention that there are those outside his bloodline that can trace a similar mark to the dawn of the Crimson Duelists. Perhaps this would explain why Corvan is also an adept red mage.
Socialite.
Corvan has connected with several people across Ul'dah and has the goal of leaving a good impression on as many people in the city as possible. It seems entirely self-serving, but he will be there to assist anyone if called upon.
Medic.
"Chocolate is always the best medicine," you hear, as a piece of candy is slipped to you by a red-garbed stranger. If there aren't nouliths at his back, the gentle clinking of vials and small bottles will accompany a pair of very concerned eyes, desperately trying to figure out how he can help. He runs a clinic in the residential district.

Relationships

Odette Beltardois

Odette Beltardois

Corvan's wife and the Lady of House Beltardois, though she would be hard-pressed to enforce the title in any way. Because she is normally quite guarded and rather surly, one can imagine how difficult it was for her to warm up to Corvan. Through persistence, tribulations aplenty, and understanding, they eventually fell in love. While Corvan believes he is one of the smartest people he knows, she is easily one of the few he places far above that echelon. He can always count on her to be his grounding force when he is trapped in his own thoughts. Though Corvan renounced his nobility, one of her greatest gifts to him has been a home he can call his own, supporting him in becoming the noble he has truly aspired to be.

Echo Syke

Echo Syke

Odette's best friend. She can always be counted on to give Corvan a problematic time through persistent mischief, but it seems to be her way of showing affection. Despite everything, she seems content with whom Odette has chosen in terms of her betrothed. Behind her eyes lies a past shrouded in pain, and with lance in hand, they burn with resolve and insight that Corvan frequently underestimates. Her taste in music and appreciation for Corvan's playing has been enough motivation for him to spend a considerable amount of time in Hawker's Alley searching for new pieces. After an incident with another of Corvan's friends, Echo decided to establish herself as Corvan's new sister. While it certainly wasn't what he asked for, she asserted that he deserved better family; who was he to argue?

Anthea Moonglove

Anthea Moonglove

Corvan's penchant for divination led him one day to a café owned by one who claimed herself to be an oracle of sorts. While the reading he received would not provide him with too much insight, what he subsequently gained from the owner turned out to be something far more valuable. A simple gesture of sending him a cake for his nameday would be the catalyst for what would become a blossoming friendship in which they both would find cherished wisdom. Anthea has told Corvan that he is one of the wisest people she knows... he does not believe that to be true at all, but he gets the feeling that her continued insistence upon seeking his counsel will force him to accept it.

Tetra Muruc

Tetra Muruc

Most of Corvan's tutelage at the Studium was medical, but his proclivity for superstition led him to take minors in Astromancy and Divination. His foremost influence was Professor Tetra, who quickly became his favorite teacher. Whether this was entirely Tetra's ulterior motive is anyone's guess. Years after his graduation and his subsequent return from self-exile, she has found her way back into his life and readily provides more guidance and counsel when he needs it. She serves as a constant reminder that his education is a never-ending endeavor.

Madeleine Beurre

Madeleine Beurre

From the moment he set foot in Ishgard, Corvan disliked knights; all of the nobility with none of the class. The only person who changed his opinion was one of the first people he met after settling in Ul'dah: Ser Madeleine Beurre, a loyal servant of Halone. While their friendship had an awkward beginning (for which Corvan was entirely to blame), it soon evolved into something unique. She is not at all afraid to be as sharp as her spear when telling him precisely what he needs to hear... or even prodding him playfully otherwise.

Eira Akal

Eira Akal

Little did Corvan know that a chance dangerous encounter on a bridge in Thanalan would lead to one of his most peculiar relationships. As the lalafell found an opportunity to get to know her savior better, she discovered that not only were his parents gone, but that he actually despised them for robbing him of a proper childhood. Eira subsequently decided at that moment to take up the mantle of his 'mamafell'. She has since proven herself worthy of the title, weaving the threads of Fate to bring people into Corvan's life that would serve him benefit and support. While he was reluctant at first, he now finds amusement in genuinely introducing her as his surrogate mother, even if only to see the bewildered faces of everyone within a few yalms.
